I had NO idea a trip would be so expensive. How do families do afford it?

Hi, Martha!  My family and I now own Disney Vacation Club, so we have taken out a big piece of the vacation puzzle by knowing our hotel stay is budgeted for already.  But before we were DVC owners, I had quite a few tricks up my sleeve to save money!

We almost always stayed a a Value resort if we were going to stay on Walt Disney World property, or we would find a less expensive option off site.  I tried to splurge once in a while by staying our last night at a deluxe resort, but primarily, it was off site or value for us.

We didn't go overboard with food on any vacation.  We still don't.  Instead of planning on a a big sit down meal each day, plan one or two big meals during your vacation.  There are some wonderful counter service options, some that even have large enough portions to share.  I also always have snacks in my backpack.  I bring granola bars, trail mix, and juice pouches so when the kids start looking for snacks, I don't have to buy them.  I do get a DoleWhip or a Mickey ice cream bar for each kid, but not one each day.

Theme park tickets are another huge expense.  If you plan on going back within a year, like for next year's vacation, look into an annual pass.  The pass is a break even at10 days, so any days you visit a  after that are essentially free!  If this is a once in a lifetime or once in a long time kind of trip, consider a park hopper option for fewer days, then spend some days at the pool!

Oh, and look for promotions like free dining or discounted rooms.  That can really help, too!
