Do you need to be staying at a hotel to visit it? We'll be staying at the Pop Century, but would like to go to the Polynesian to see the MK fireworks and Electric Boat Parade. We'll have our own car, would it be better to use Disney transportation?

Jamie, you do not have to be a guest of a particular resort hotel to look around there.  When we go, one of my family's favorite things to do is make dinner reservations in various resort hotel's just as an excuse to nose around a bit.  But you certainly don't have to eat in one of the hotel's to visit either.  You are more than welcome to visit the resort hotels just to have a look around.  The Boardwalk resort area, for example, offers a wide array of entertainment options.  The Polynesian is another great place to visit.

With the exception of the monorail that runs in between three of the resort hotels, Disney transportation does not run from resort to resort.  If you'll have a car with you, you'll probably find it easiest to just use your car to explore the resorts you're interested in seeing.  When you arrive at the security check, just let the Cast Member know that you would like to have a look around and they will let you in.  If memory serves me correctly I think they give you a parking pass to display in your car window.  Do keep in mind though that you are not permitted to leave your car in the lot and board the monorail for a day at the park.  Enjoy your explorations!
