Hi moms! Looking to do my first 5K at WDW? Coming from NY so time of year is a factor. Any suggestions? 11 yr old DD will be with me. Is it better to add park days before or after race days? Thank you

    Hi, Paula!

It's so exciting to hear you and your daughter are interested in participating in your first runDisney event. I can't think of a more magical place to begin your running journey.

There are currently five differently themed 5k races to choose from at Walt Disney World® Resort.

-Walt Disney World Family Fun Run 5k in January
    -Royal Family 5k in February
    -Expedition Everest Challenge in May
-Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run in October
-Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5k in November

You mention time of year being a factor, is this due to possible weather concerns coming from New York? If so, I recommend considering the Disney Happy Haunted 5k Trail Run held in October during The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend. This 5k course through the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex features Disney characters, on-course entertainment, varied running terrain, and current availability for the 2014 event.

If weather is not a factor, my top suggestion would be the Royal Family 5k held in February during the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend. This enchanted course will take you through Epcot and features many of the Disney Princesses as you make your way through World Showcase. This event makes for the perfect girls' weekend away.

I hope this gives you a good starting point, Paula. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions you may have regarding any of the events mentioned above. I am here to help you navigate your way through selecting your first runDisney race event.

    Have a great day!
