    Milissa from ND Asked

I am legally blind and have many totally blind friends that I will be traveling with to Orlando for a convention this July. I heard that some Disney attractions have audio description. Do you have any information on this? Thanks

Hi, Milissa!  After five retina detachments and numerous surgeries, my husband is a low vision survivor that has successfully navigated Walt Disney World theme parks with varying degrees of sight.  There are a few things you will find at the theme parks that are available to help you and your friends at Walt Disney World!

If you go to guest services at the theme parks, you can get guide maps in Braille, as well as a guide book in Braille.  For a $25 refundable deposit, they will lend you a Walkman, and you can choose between an audio guide - which is like a map; or an audio tour - which is a more descriptive, more extensive overview of the attractions and the theme park.

My favorite thing, however, is the handheld captioning device!  For a $100 refundable deposit, they will lend you one of these devices, with the setting on "assisted listening".  The device is activated by the attractions, and you will get a pretty good description from the device.

I hope you have a magical time on your upcoming vacation to the Orlando area!
