Hi Kay, I am planning our family's first WDW trip in January 2013! Our girls are ages 6 & 7. My husband likes his space and loves the outdoors, so we are considering staying in one of the Fort Wilderness cabins. What advice can you offer for a stay

Hi Kathleen! Our family absolutely loves the Fort Wilderness area and have stayed many times in the cabins. We had previously been true Yacht Club resort guests and tried it one time and have since repeated.

The first thing you will realize is the different atmosphere at Fort Wilderness. You can smell the pine trees and the noise level is so low you will soon forget you are at Walt Disney World. The cabins are spaced enough so you can sit on your deck for a picnic or grill and not be on top of your neighbor. You can purchase charcoal and simple food at the Trading Posts there or you can get a grocery delivery service to fill your needs. (Gardengrocer.com)

Inside there is one bedroom and one bath but a comfy murphy bed in living room is a good choice too. The living/kitchen area gives parents options to stay up and watch tv or a movie (dvd player provided).

Fort Wilderness is full of outdoor activities such as archery, swimming (2 pools), canoeing, Segway experience, tennis, and plenty of walking. When we stay I get up early and walk the dogs as I love to see the deer, turkey and armadillos greeting the new day! The internal bus system runs very smoothly and you can reach all parks via bus and the Magic Kingdom via a great boat ride. There is a marina where you can rent boats and you can fish on the inside canals but it is catch and release. At night there is a Chip and Dale campfire where you can roast marshmallows and hotdogs and watch movies under the stars. You also might want to consider the Hoop Dee Doo Revue dinner show or Mickey's Backyard Barbecue as they are both held at the Fort. Check out the Disney stables where Cinderella's ponies live and where you can also get the girls a pony ride. Ask for Nemo who is my grandson's favorite!

Last but not least take a trip to the beach one night to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks show as well as the electric water pageant! It is a great way to end a wonderful Disney day!
