How important is it to make resvations? we are going to be at WDW 8/28-9/2, when we were there around that same time frame in 2009 we made all our dining reservations from home before we left but then felt like we wasted alot of time working around them?

If you're the kind of family who doesn't mind eating quick service meals, Kim, you can probably get by without making dining reservations.  If, on the other hand, you have your heart set on certain restaurants, it is very important to make reservations.  As for working around them, I try to plan a rough itinerary before I make dining reservations.  That way, you can sort of stick restaurants into your itinerary where they fit.  For example, if you're going to spend a day at Hollywood Studios, you might try to plan a dinner at Mama Melrose that day.  If you're already at the park, making it over for your dining reservation should be relatively painless.  Then again, if you really want the most flexibility, you can certainly skip reservations and have a completely open mind to eating wherever and whenever there are openings.
