I'm totally new to Disney and we are surprising my 3 kids with a trip Jan 12 for 3 days. I am not sure what we need to reserve ahead of time. I don't understand how FASTPASS works, and also, is it true that the princess dining is closed?

Howdy, Erin! You have certainly come to the right place for help with your first Disneyland Resort vacation. I am so excited for you to see the looks on your children's faces when they arrive at the parks!

Other than your hotel accommodations, the only other things to book early are dining reservations which can be made up to 60 days in advance. Some restaurants and character meals are quite popular and require making reservations as soon as possible, while others will still have availability for same-day reservations. I suggest looking through the different table service dining options available and making one or two reservations for your upcoming trip.

    Disney FASTPASS Service
is included with your theme park admission and it allows you to return to an attraction at a later time to skip most of the wait. You simply visit a FASTPASS distribution kiosk for an attraction you want to ride, insert each theme park ticket, and FASTPASS reminder tickets will be distributed that display a return time and the time when you can pull your next FASTPASS. When it's time to ride, head to the FASTPASS queue entrance and scan your theme park tickets and head on in to ride. Or, for an additional fee, you can upgrade to the Disney MaxPass option which allows you to make FASTPASS selections on your mobile device through the Disneyland app.

You are correct that Ariel's Grotto is currently closed for refurbishment as part of the transition to Pixar Pier. There hasn't been an announcement as to another location where you can dine with the princesses at this time, but you can still enjoy other character meals in Disneyland Park and the Disneyland Resort Hotels.

I hope this helps! Have a magical visit!
