I'm a single parent with 4 kids (12, 9, 8, 6 at travel time) planning 1st trip to DW. Looking for tips, suggestions, resources for single parent families (best dates to visit, rides, resorts, etc). Thanks for any help!

    Hi Bob,

Congrats on planning a first vacation to the Walt Disney World Resorts! You ask a big question so I will give you some starting points and then feel free to come back and ask more specific questions as your vacation develops.

Timing is everything as they say. The least expensive times to visit are when children are in school. This is in January up until President's Day weekend. It is between Easter and Memorial Day. It is mid-August to October 1. It is two weeks before Thanksgiving Day in late November and the two weeks prior to Christmas. If you need to go at another time, the summer, while crowded, would be least expensive versus the holidays.

As for resorts, you may want to look at a cabin at Fort Wilderness, a family suite at the Art of Animation or All-Star Music or a room at Port Orleans Riverside. The room at Riverside would be the least expensive but also the smallest space. You may even want to consider a deluxe villa. While it is more expensive, you would have access to a full side kitchen, washer/dryer and two baths.

As for tickets, skip the park hopper option and focus on one park a day. This will allow you to maximize your time in each park without traveling between parks. I always recommend this to first time guests.

As for attractions and shows, sit down with your children and plan the trip. My children love planning our trips including which attractions and shows are a must as well as picking a restaurant for dinner. Give each child 2 or 3 picks a day and do those at a minimum and let each pick a restaurant.

Another tip for saving money is ordering food from an online grocer such as Garden Grocer to have breakfast in your room, order snacks and drinks and even  a lunch foods. It is a great money saving tip.

    Wishing you a wonderful vacation!
