I'm planning a Disney World Vacation for May 2015 with 6 adults and 1 child(4 years old) and I would appreciate any money saving tips on hotels or really anything. Is it best to do the Vacation package or stay at a hotel outside of Disney but close by?

Hi Danielle! The good thing about your vacation being almost two years away is you have plenty of time to budget and save! First, I would suggest is to head over to mousesavers.com and allears.net and sign up for their newsletters.  At least once a month you will receive an email from them that will contain information on offers that are available.  I have seen great deals on offsite hotel suites and homes near Disney. The problem with staying offsite is you will need a car.  But if you live close enough to drive (and for us, close enough is 20 hours), you would have a car and save on the cost of flights.

All that being said, I will only stay at a Disney resort on Disney property.  I want to feel the magic from the moment I arrive on Magical Express until the moment I leave.  There are ways you can save by staying on property.  For example, you could stay at a value resort.  In your case, you would need two rooms as the occupancy for each is four people.  They also have rooms with adjoining doors.  Another option is to check out the Swan & Dolphin.  They are located onsite but considered an off-site property as they are not owned by Disney.

You can keep an eye on special offers as your dates get closer.  Hopefully one will become available for your travel dates.  When on a budget, I typically will go for the base tickets vs. a hopper.  It has always worked out fine for us knowing that we can only visit one park per day (vs. hopping to other parks throughout the day).  When we fly, we don't book our flights through Disney.  I book mine separately and usually use a points program through Southwest so many of my flights end up being free.

Danielle, I wish you the best of luck as you plan your first Disney vacation. We look forward to answering all your questions.
