Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular

I’m going to MNSSHP this year and have read the costume rules for adults but still confused. I plan on dressing up as Maleficent, I’m going to be sure my dress doesn’t drag on the ground. Has anyone dressed up as Maleficent before for the Halloween party?

    Boo to You, Brandi!

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel. My son is obsessed with Maleficent, and this zero-sewing-skills mama is working on a Maleficent costume for him this year (he was King Elsa at last year’s Mickey’s Not -So-Scary Halloween Party, because he really loves his fabulous ladies). We saw lots of Maleficents at last year’s party – it’s such an iconic look, and there are so many possibilities. It’s good to be bad!

As you note, the Costume Guidelines for Guests ages 14 and older prohibit full-length dresses that reach or drag on the ground. Trust me when I tell you: you want a shorter skirt, because it is hot at the party. Even after dark, most autumn Orlando evenings are very hot. I wore a tank dress as my costume’s base last year and was still very warm. For Maleficent, you might consider a black dress with a short cape that reaches your waist (note that capes may not fall below the waist on adult costumes). Another idea is a sparkly black, acid green, or purple tutu with a black top. I consider the ideal adult costume to be cool and comfortable, with just enough flair that it’s clear which character you’re going for. A great headpiece will complete the look – I’ve seen Maleficent Minnie Mouse Ears that could be perfect!

As a side note, as you consider how “all out” you want to go with your costume, if you are thinking about green face paint, be sure to select paint that is sweat-proof, and bring touch-up makeup and make-up remover wipes. I wore face paint last year, and I experienced a lot of, ahem, dripping. For my son’s Elsa costume, we did blue glitter gel on his face and in his hair, and it had a fabulous effect and didn’t bother him at all.

Brandi, if you’re looking for costume inspiration, I would do an internet search for “Maleficent Disneybound” or for Maleficent costume ideas. Double-check the costume guidelines as you put the final touches on your costume, and get ready to have so much frightful fun with the "glittering assemblage" at the party!

Wishing you a spook-tacular time at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party,
    Robyn
