I'm so desperate for and answer. I can't figure out what is the best way to purchase tickets and does it matter that I need them for this weekend. And are there free things to do in the area that are Disney Character related.

Tickets are available for purchase online or via phone, but if you need them this weekend then those options are out because you'd need about two weeks for delivery. The best way for you to purchase tickets in your case would be to either get them from the check-in or guest services desk at your hotel (if you're staying on WDW property) or at the entrance to any of the theme parks. It's very easy to buy tickets at these places. I have found the cast members that work there to be very helpful in explaining the various ticket options.

Unfortunately there is not much character related at Disney that's free. You could visit the shops at Downtown Disney with no admission fee. You will see plenty of Disney merchandise there, but you're not likely encounter any characters. Most of the characters are at the parks, which require you to purchase admission, or at the character dining experiences at the resorts, which require the purchase of a meal.

It sounds like you will be entering the theme parks though. You will see plenty of characters there and meeting them is included in your admission with no extra charge.

Hope you have a great trip!
