Idea for son's 11th bday is surf lessons but worried too difficult to do and any safety issues. Is a good swimmer but concerned about powerful waves. Anyone on panel that can share their child's experience and put an overly cautious mom's mind at ease?

    Debi,

I have not done this experience personally, but wanted to share some thoughts about the surfing lessons. If ever there was a safer way to learn to surf, I have never heard of it. The environment is controlled, the instructors are trained professionals, and the classes are held when nobody else is there, so that any chance of a mishap due to large crowds is minimized.

I would NEVER want to take lessons on the open ocean. Too many variables that would put me in jeopardy. But I am itching to try it here because it takes an otherwise scary experience and makes it both safe and exciting at the same time. Of course nothing is 100% safe, but crossing the street isn't either, so I would not let it worry you.

I wish I could back my comments with an "I did it back in 19xx and loved it!" testimonial, but I cannot. What I can say is that people I have met who did do it loved it. And not that this is important, but you have no idea how cool he is going to look to his buddies back home when he tells them he learned to surf over summer vacation!

    Have a magical vacation!
