My husband is in a wheelchair. Should we bring his with us through the airport, shuttle, etc. or does the airport make arrangements to get him to the Magic Express bus and to the resort until we can rent one for him?

    Hi Marilyn,

Welcome back to the Disney Parks Moms Panel! Clearly, you are busy planning. I love it!

On our last visit, I requested a wheelchair for my husband through the airline. Like your husband, he can walk some distances but I was worried that he would not make it through the airport when we had to connect and to later board Disney's Magical Express Transportation. An airline employee was ready to assist him with a wheelchair to get to Disney's Magical Express transportation area but he declined the assistance and was able to walk.

Since each airline has different accommodations for guests with disabilities, I suggest you check with your airline. I also checked the Orlando International Airport website. They have a helpful guide for "Disabled Access" that provides a map and describes the facility design. Under their Frequently Asked Questions for Disabled Access, they estimate the walking distance between gates in the airline terminal.

Renting a wheelchair is a relatively easy process. If your husband will need a wheelchair at the resort, you may want to rent from a Disney Featured Provider. They can deliver to your resort hotel. If he will just need one in the parks, then you could just rent a wheelchair there. We rented an electric conveyance vehicle (ECV) on our last visit. There is a rental location near the front entrance at each theme park. Be sure to inquire about length of stay rentals when you arrive - you could save some money!

Marilyn, be sure to review the Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities. It will give you information on attraction access. Safe travels!

Magic, memories and Minnie Mouse hugs,
