My husband and I will be traveling with our three kids to WDW for the first time; we will be staying at the Disney Port-Orleans Riverside. How far is the monorail and bus to go into the other additional parks?

Disney's Port Orleans Riverside does not have access to the monorail, so you won't be able to use the monorail to get to the parks from the resort.  However, if you are visiting the Magic Kingdom and would like to visit one of the Magic Kingdom resorts (The Contemporary, The Polynesian, and The Grand Floridian), you may take the monorail to do that.  The monorail also goes from the Magic Kingdom to the Ticket/Transportation Center where you can change monorails to go to Epcot.

To go to other places at WDW from your resort, you will be able to take a bus.  There are 4 bus stops throughout Port Orleans Riverside, so one is never far away.  Also, a boat will take you to the French Quarter throughout the day and later in the afternoon and evening, it goes to Downtown Disney.
