My husband & I are taking our 4 boys to Disney (in Orlando) on Oct 16th.Our eldest son has autism. Are there any accommodations for special needs kids?Any ideas how to make this 1st trip to Disney easier for him so that all 4 boys have a wonderful time?

    Hi, Rachel!

Your first trip to Walt Disney World! How exciting!

Regarding your son's special needs, be sure to read this very informative post on Disney Parks Blog entitled Disney Parks Disability Access Service Card Fact Sheet. This new service is effective as of October 9th, 2013, so you'll find the most accurate information on that page.

To help ensure that the entire family has the best time, be sure to take advantage of that service. Also, do what you've always done as a parent: pay close attention to each boy's needs, anticipating what will be needed next before it becomes an issue. (We moms are good at that, aren't we? :-) )  In light of that, have with you whatever your family may need for the day. We bring a wide-mouthed refillable water bottle (allows us to refill with ice and drinks throughout the day) per person, as well as easy to transport snacks, too. Schedule breaks into your day, being sure to stop for lunch early; the lines will be shorter and tables more readily available. The same goes for dinner. Be sure to sit down before everyone is hungry; this way, if there is a wait for a table or a delay in the delivery of your food, it won't be a problem.

We also pair a sleep-in kind of morning on the day after we've stayed in the parks until close. This, too, helps everyone enjoy a full day and then relax a bit thereafter. Go at a pace that allows you all to enjoy your visit and slip in a little pool time if you are staying in a Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

Send me another question including the ages of your sons, if you're staying at a WDW Resort hotel and if you're on a Dining Plan. I'd be happy to suggest an itinerary for your first trip to WDW!

Enjoy what's sure to be a magical visit, Rachel!
