My husband passed away in November 2011 and we are coming for a vacation (kids ages 5, 8 and 17) to Disney World as "in memory of". We visited Disney in 2009 when my husband was with us so my question is how do I make this trip special and fun?

    Hello, April!

I am so sorry for the loss of your spouse and for your children's loss of their dad. Wishes cannot bring him back to you, but maybe we can find some magical moments to help bring smiles to your hearts as you remember what you love most about that very special man.

Start by asking each child to "pick a favorite moment with Dad when we were all together in Walt Disney World." Look through pictures of the last trip to help jog your memories. Then allow each family member to choose a spot to revisit where those favorite memories were made. This could be done verbally, in writing, or in drawings, whatever is more comfortable for each child. (Don't forget to do the same and share with them, too, Mom!) Consider having shirts made in your husband's honor, with a favorite photo or saying, and wear them that first day. His smile will be with you as you walk through those gates once again!

You are looking to make this trip extra special and fun, so celebrate life by trying something new! Your littlest one was too small for many of the attractions on the last visit, so be sure to try as many more thrilling experiences as he or she wants. While celebrating your husband's life, his legacy and his children, encourage your older children to try a new experience, too. A roller coaster that used to seem intimidating, a show you never got to enjoy or even something extra such as parasailing will also give each one of you an additional highlight of an already very special trip.

Whatever you decide, your children will always remember that their time spent with their dad was special, and that this trip will only enhance those memories by bringing them right back to where the magic was created. I'll bet you will feel him there with you, happy that you are all happy, too!

Send more information about your children's favorites and any questions you may have; I'd be honored to help!
