My husband and I go to WDW for our anniversary in Dec.- the most expensive time to visit. For our 15th anniversary, and we want go from a moderate to deluxe resort. Can we do this on a budget? Should we wait for December deals to upgrade our reservation?

    Angela:

I rarely suggest waiting for a deal, as you never know if the resort you want--not to mention the view--might get booked up. If you book through a Disney Authorized Travel Agent, I've found that they will keep you abreast of any "deals" that come for your dates. And as long as you are outside the window of the 45-day change/cancel policy at Disney can book the discounted deal and pocket the difference. However, if you book directly through Disney, you're on your own to look for the discounts.

Before you agree to pay top dollar for your accommodations, have you considered tweaking your dates in December a wee bit? By moving from the last week of December to the first three weeks, usually you can go from Holiday Peak rates (indeed the highest) to Value Season. This alone could pay for the move from a Moderate resort to a Deluxe.

Another thought is to go "semi-deluxe." Both Animal Kingdom and Wilderness Lodge fall into this category as they do not offer monorail transportation to the parks nor walk access. However, both are well-themed and host wonderful restaurants at which to celebrate your anniversary in Jiko and Artist's Point. You can also save a bit by staying in the Garden Wing of The Contemporary. Although the views range from gorgeous (Bay Lake) to dreadful (the parking lot), it might be worth the splurge for a water view and benefit from its large rooms and monorail.

Last idea: Consider the Swan & Dolphin. Although you won't be able to use the Disney Dining Plan or receive packages to your resort, these hotels offer location, location, location! The Boardwalk is my favorite place for trips with my husband. We can enjoy the views, strolls by Crescent Lake, top-notch dining and easy access to our favorite park, Epcot. Again, both the Swan & Dolphin offer ample space in their rooms and a deluxe feel--but at price that can fit most budgets.

Wishing y'all a memorable anniversary and a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
