I had heard that you can go to any of the Disney resort hotel pools if you are staying at a Disney resort. Is this true? Could I have a campsite at Fort Wilderness and go to the Polynesian hotel to enjoy the volcano pool at any time?

All pool entrances clearly post that their pool is for guests of that resort only.

Guests that are eligible to pool hop (with a few exceptions including Stormalong Bay at the Yacht and Beach Club, Bay Lake Tower and Kidani Village) are Disney Vacation Club Members. Even for DVC Members there are restrictions on the time of year that they can pool hop.

Finally, if your resort pool is being renovated, you'll be given pool privileges at a nearby resort.

Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter are "sister" resorts and allow guests to use all facilities (including pools) at both resorts. They are convenient situated just a short walk from each other or a fun boat ride on the Sassagoula River.
