googled "disney pin trading" and got scared... what's the simple explanation for what i need to know. traveling with two 12 year old girls...it's our first visit

    Hi Irene,

Please don't be worried. Disney Pin trading is a very big deal to some and has now branched off into events, podcasts, magazines and more. The good news though is pin trading is still very easy and fun for even the newcomer and average guest like you and me.

My boys and I are what I like to refer to as really good pin collectors and very casual pin traders. The Disney Cast Members love trading with guests and we very rarely encounter any hardcore traders. The first thing you need to do is have at least one pin. I like to purchase a collection of pins before our trip. Check eBay and search Disney pins, often you can purchase a variety of starter pins and sets for very reasonable prices. If you prefer to wait until you arrive at Disney, you can purchase starter sets at any Disney merchandise location. This set has a lanyard (cloth necklace that the pins are displayed on) and approximately 6-8 starter pins.

The next thing is to trade. Approach any Cast Member displaying pins and ask if you can see their pins. If you see a pin you would like to trade, just ask. Next simply trade the pin you do not want for their pin that you do want.  That is it, you have made your first trade. Pins can be purchased at most Disney shops and carts and there is a large Pin Traders tore at Downtown Disney. Some pins are collector items or higher priced so be sure if you purchase any of these, you do not leave them on your child's lanyard to be traded. There are so many pins to pick from that we like to each pick a specific theme and collect those pins.

This is a great way to interact with the Cast Members and I like to use it as a learning tool for my kids to learn proper manners and communication skills. Happy trading!
