Mom And Son Safari

We want to go to DW in Sept. 2008. We have 3 boys, ages 7, 6, 18 mos. We are concerned about how the 18 mos. old will do on the trip. We went to DW when the baby was 9 mos. and he did terrific. What can you tell me about taking an 18 mos. old?? Thank you!

Taking a toddler is definitely different. When my girls went as infants they slept anywhere and everywhere, and it was very easy to stay in the parks while they napped on rides, in the stroller, etc. With a toddler that can be more challenging. My girls are easy in that regard and still sleep in the stroller, though we can no longer transfer to a ride with them while they doze. However, most people I know said that their toddlers could not sleep in the parks and they took mid-day breaks to accommodate. If that's the case with your son then take advantage of the morning Extra Magic Hours (EMH) and hit the park as early as you can, returning for a nap around lunch time.

Another big change for us at that age was the need to run! My girls wanted to get out and move in their own, which can be tricky in a crowd like you'll find at Disney. If you're not already, familiarize yourself with the playground locations - they are a huge help! The Laughing Place playground for little ones is right between Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and that's always been a particularly good location for us so the little ones can play while the older ones ride. The Playhouse Disney show in Hollywood Studios is also great. They are characters that your little one will likely recognize, and it's interactive so he can get up and dance to burn off energy at the same time.

Distractions are key at this age. Lots of snacks, and I load up on trinkets from the dollar store. They don't have to be great quality, just new is entertaining enough. Bubble stuff is great to kill time standing in lines, as are small cars and yo-yos (even for the older kids). Pal Mickey is another (though more expensive) option that's fun for the whole family.

It's a slower pace, but we've always enjoyed it and we keep going back for more. Gluttons for punishment or Disney fanatics? Decide for yourself after you make this next trip.  :)
