    Drew Asked

Hi, a friend told me you would be a great help. I use a wheelchair. My main question is, should we rent a car to get around to the parks? We are staying at Animal Kingdom.

Hi, Drew! Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel!

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming visit to Walt Disney World. You are staying at one of my family's favorite resorts, Animal Kingdom Lodge! You are going to LOVE this resort!

My husband also uses a wheelchair for mobility (he is non-ambulatory) and I would without hesitation advise that you rent a car. In the past we have used the complimentary buses that Disney provides to guests staying at on-site resorts, but ultimately we found that it is much more efficient and convenient for us to use a rental car. While the buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts, it can take a while to load and we've noticed that some bus drivers are better trained than others. If there are several guests using ECV's (scooters) who are in line in front of you, you will likely have to wait for a second bus during more crowded times of day (such as at park opening and closing). With a rental car it's easy to exit a theme park if you'd like to return to your resort for a midday rest, swim and snack.

You'll be able to park your rental car in one of the designated handicapped spaces in the parking lots at each of the four theme parks. Don't forget to pack your blue handicapped hang tag in your carry-on luggage. The handicapped parking is located very near the entrance to each theme park. At Magic Kingdom you'll have to park your car and then take either the monorail or ferry to the park entrance - both transportation methods are wheelchair accessible.

Please come back to ask me any additional questions about mobility challenges or vacation planning. I would love to share my advice and tips with you from my family's own personal experiences with accessible rides and attractions, resort pools, tours, miniature golf - you name it!

P.S. We got a great deal on a rental car rate through Costco Travel on a really nice Grand Caravan minivan.
