Fisrt trip to WDW, arriving 8/09/14 - leaving 8/15/14, whats the weather like and tips on how to prepare for...have 5yr & 8yr

    Hi Jeffrey,

How exciting to be planning your first trip to Walt Disney World!  It is quite hot in Florida in August; however, there is plenty that you can do to mitigate the heat.  My family often travels to Walt Disney World in August and with some good tips, we find ourselves quite happy.  You can expect high temperatures of about 92 degrees Fahrenheit in August in Orlando.  It is also a fairly rainy month, so you should be prepared for both heat and humidity.

My family starts by arriving at theme parks as early as possible when we visit Walt Disney World during August, even 30 minutes before opening time if we can.  By getting to the theme parks early, not only will you be there during the cooler part of the day, but the crowds are significantly lower in the morning.  We go to the attractions that we most want to do in the morning, and typically make a late lunch reservation, maybe around 1:30 p.m.  This way, we are heading into a nice, air conditioned restaurant just as the heat starts to get intense.  After this, we generally head back to our resort for a swim in the hottest part of the afternoon.  If we like, we can return to a theme park after the sun has set for some cooler theme park time in the late afternoon and evening.

What you bring in your backpack to a theme park in August is important as well.  We always bring lots of bottled water with us to stay hydrated.  If you can freeze a bottle or two, it will have the added bonus of keeping the person carrying the water cool!  Also of course sunscreen and hats are key.  We also bring rain ponchos and extra socks in case of an afternoon rain shower.

Using these simple tricks makes our time at Walt Disney World in August quite comfortable, Jeffery.  I hope that they are helpful for you as well.  Have a great time planning your vacation, and please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
