First trip in 18 days! Would like to follow schedules suggested in BirnBaum, but have 8 yo & 2 yo. Should 8 yo and husband go straight to Big Thunder Mountain and bigger rides? Would like to ride most rides with all 4 of us. How do I follow guides?

18 days will come so quickly, and you'll be able to see Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival!

If I were in this situation, I'd prefer staying together as a family so that you can experience everything together.  I really think it so much more magical that way.  A handful of years ago we were in a similar situation as you currently are and didn't have any difficulty with our oldest wanting to do things on his own.

Are you a Disney guest?  If you are, you can enter the Magic Kingdom early on some days.  We like to do this so we can do nearly everything in Fantasyland before the park even opens and then we are right by Frontierland as the entire park opens.  It makes it so easy to get to Big Thunder/Splash Mountain.  We often grab a fast pass for Splash Mountain and then ride Big Thunder.  Your family can participate in the Rider Switch program which will allow Mom/Dad an opportunity to both ride while having a little one.  Click here for a video explanation, but you'll need to go to the 3rd page and look for the Rider Switch video.  Also, many of the faster rides have nearby play areas for younger children so they can be having fun while older siblings are riding.

We also discovered that afternoons were good times to offer a few other opportunities for our oldest son while his brothers needed to go back to the resort to nap.

So for following the guides, I think they are great starting points, but we always still pretty much follow our instincts.  For example, when my sons were younger, they asked to ride Buzz Lightyear over and over.  So, rather than making it our goal to check off items on the "list to do," we all kept riding.  The kids were so happy and hadn't even given a second thought to things they didn't do.
