I am a first timer planning a trip for my family of six, including my disable son. Where do I begin my planning and what is the best time of year?

    Hi Barbara,

I love first trips to the Walt Disney World Resorts! I love the magic of this special place.

Time of the visit is relevant. I love October because it is cooler and the crowds are lower. However, this does not work anymore as my children are in high school and missing school is not an option for us. The holidays are packed especially at Thanksgiving and Easter and I never recommend these dates for first time visitors. If you have to go when school is out, try the last two weeks in August when most US schools are back so crowds are lower and you have adjusted to the heat. You might even find a deal.

You will need to determine the number of days you want to visit. I generally think you can tour Magic Kingdom in 1.5-2 days, Epcot in 2 days, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom are each a day. Of course you can always do more or less depending on what you like to do.

As for where to start after a date and length to visit, look at the resorts. You will need to concentrate on either two rooms, a family suite such as the ones at All Star Music or Art of Animation or suite at select resorts like the Boardwalk or Beach Club.

After your resort, think about tickets. I recommend only the base Magic Your Way ticket for first time guests. This way you spend the entire day at one park and concentrate on seeing all the magic. This includes the side entertainment you might miss trying to visit two parks in a day.

Now that you have the framework, plan the specifics like dining and FastPass+. I also recommend you visit the Guests with Disabilities to page to see what services Disney can offer to make your trip easier with extra pixie dust.

    Wishing you a magical vacation!
