Hi! This will be our first time traveling to Disney World. Kids are going to want everything. Any ideas on how much money I would be spending just buying random toys, Mickey Ears, etc?

    Maria:

Every family is different and every family's budget is different. Some spend $50 per child for an entire trip, others $50 a day to full credit card privileges for teenagers. For my family, we've had the children save their money for an entire year in a large plastic Coke bottle from Epcot's Club Cool to spending just what we had earned on our Disney Rewards Visa from Chase.

But our trip this past week has me considering something for all future trips: purchasing wristlet Disney gift cards with a set amount on them. Because I was not only taking my own children but also my nieces, I was on more of a budget than past year's trips. So I purchased a Disney gift card on an expandable plastic wristlet at the Ticket Booth at Epcot with the intent for everyone to enjoy the Food & Wine festival. I was amazed at how the children paced themselves and left the park with more than half of the $30 I'd given them. So I decided to experiment and see just how far they could go on the balance. For the rest of the trip when I was asked, "Can I have an ice cream?" or "How about this pair of earrings?" I told them they were welcome to spend their wristlet money. As of the last morning we were here, two still had over $12 to spend. So before I recommend a specific amount, let me first suggest that you set a budget and stick by it, choosing not purchase randomly but thoughtfully. Souvenirs will mean more if your child has to help make the spending decision.

So, my answer: My elementary-age child usually wants something every day that is somewhere in the price range of $12.95 for a stuffed animal to $24.95 for a pair of Glow with the Show Ears along with a snack of an ice cream bar. A budget of $30 is reasonable. But some princess dresses can cost up to $65. The splurge for one family may be common for another, so take Jiminy Crickett's advice and let your conscience be your guide.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
