My fiancé and I will be celebrating our honeymoon aboard the Disney Dream on January 9, 2015. Our destination is the Bahamas. I was wondering if it would be necessary for us to get passports or if that's an expense we can pass on?

    Ahoy, DJ!

Thanks for stopping by with your question, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding! What a wonderful way to spend your honeymoon - cruising with Captain Mickey! You'll fall in love with the beautiful Disney Dream.

At this time, U.S. Citizens departing from and returning to the same U.S. port are able to use a Photo I.D. and certified birth certificate to board the ship and re-enter the country. That being said, passport regulations are always changing, and Disney Cruise Line "strongly recommends" that all Guests have a valid U.S. Passport.

In the unfortunate event you should encounter an emergency (emergency stop in a foreign country, medical emergency, etc.), passports would be required for air travel. We decided to bite the bullet and get passports a few years ago. The peace of mind that they provide definitely outweighs the added expense. The only thing I regret about getting a passport is the terrible passport photo I have to live with for ten years.

To keep up-to-date on the most current passport regulations, visit www.travel.state.gov. It normally takes 6-8 weeks to get a passport, so you're still in the window of opportunity if you choose to do so.

I hope this helps with your decision! Wishing you a magical wedding day that's everything you've ever dreamed of. Take a deep breath and take it all in, it goes by so fast!

    Happy Honeymoon! - Diane W.
