My family is traveling to WDW in April and my mother-in-law wants to know if there is somewhere on Disney that would be like ‘going to the ocean; sandy beach and water.’ Please help?

There are several places at WDW that feel "oceany," with lovely sand, and lounge chairs, and a water view. You just can't actually swim in the water at these places. Let me explain ...

Since WDW is in the center of the state, you will obviously not be able to experience the real ocean without driving about an hour. However, there are several beautiful lake areas at WDW. Many of the resorts that border the lakes are landscaped with pristine white sand. Also at these resorts you may find chaise chairs, lounge swings, or even cabanas at the sandy areas. Children will make castles and bury each other in the sand. You will find adults there sunbathing, napping, and reading the latest John Grisham, just like at the real beach.

The only thing you won't find at these beach-like areas is people swimming. Florida law prohibits swimming in these lakes. (Over the years I have heard different reasons for this, including the dangers of swimming in a waterway used by many boats and problems with the quality of the water.) The good news is that most of these sandy "beach" areas are located steps away from lovely swimming pools. So, if you get hot, you can just jump in the pool and then go back to your sand. Also, many of the "beach" areas have nearby water recreation areas where you could rent a boat to explore the lake yourself or sign up for a guided excursion. (You can sign up in advance by calling 407-WDW-PLAY.)

The WDW resorts that have "beach" areas include: the Yacht & Beach Club resorts, the Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, the Grand Floridian, the Polynesian, and the Contemporary.

I'm sure your mother-in-law would be happy at any of these places.
