    Eric from VT Asked

My family is returning to WDW in Feb. My wife and I would like a night out alone. What are some options for a 13 year old. The parks say 14 to enter, and the child activities like pirate cruise are 4-12. Looking for ideas. He is mature and independent.

Hi, Eric! I'm so glad you stopped by the Disney Parks Moms Panel. As a mom of three boys (two of them teenagers), I can certainly appreciate the fact that you and your wife would like some alone time. It also sounds like your 13-year-old is mature and, therefore, unlikely to pull off any Phineas and Ferb style shenanigans while you're away for a few hours.

What I would recommend is letting your son explore your Walt Disney World Resort hotel on his own. Depending on where you are staying, you could make a dinner reservation for your date night at a Table Service restaurant at your Resort hotel, and let him take himself to dinner at the Resort's Quick Service dining (and pay for it with his MagicBand). We've done this with our Mouseketeers a couple of times; once when we stayed at Disney's Contemporary Resort and ate a leisurely dinner at California Grill, and another when we vacationed at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, and we enjoyed our glasses of South African wine (and a mighty delicious Braai Burger) at Victoria Falls Lounge. This way he'll know you're still close by if he needs you.

Since children over 12 do not need adult supervision at the Resort pools, he might want to spend some time there (by the way, Walt Disney World Resort hotels keep their pools heated to a comfortable 82 degrees year-round, even in February). Make sure to pick up a Recreation Calendar when you check-in, so you can make a note of the various daily poolside activities, as well as the nightly Campfire and Movies Under the Stars schedules, all of which he could attend on his own.

Eric, I hope you and your wife enjoy spending time together during your night out. Or as Anna likes to say, spend some time "finishing each other's...sandwiches!"

Meet the Panelist: Eean, Pennsylvania

Hi, I'm Eean from Pennsylvania!  I may have an unusual name, but my passion for Disney is not unique.  It’s amazing how many people you can find who love talking about, "The Most Magical Place On Earth!"  I'm that mom who always has her ears perked at PTO meetings, in the grocery store aisle, or at middle school basketball games waiting for an opportunity to give someone a planning tip to help make their vacation even more magical.
