My family is interested in hiring a motorised boat during our forthcoming vacation. Do you need to be a hotel guest to hire one ? Also do you have to return it to the marina you hire it from or can you return it to an alternative bay lake marina?

Hello Joanna and thanks for bringing such a great question to the Disney Parks Moms Panel!
One of my families favourite leisure activities to enjoy at Walt Disney World Resort is to while-a-way a relaxing hour or so by hiring a Sun Tracker Pontoon boat or similar from Motorised Boat Rentals which enables us to explore the interesting lakes and water ways.
All Guests are welcome to hire boats from any marina location and in my own experience Guests are indeed required to return watercraft to the marina where it was originally hired.
My personal favourite marina is Disney's Contemporary Resort where for the more adventurous or thrill-seeker Guest Sammy Duvall's Watersports Centre is also based!  From this well placed marina Guests can navigate Bay Lake taking in the sights of the old Treasure or Discovery Island which I remember from my childhood as a nature reserve plus the now abandoned River Country water park and of course the infamous tennis shoe tree where legend has it retiring Cast Members toss onto a tree tied together shoes as a memento of their time working on the water taxis!
Wishing you an extra magical upcoming trip to Walt Disney World Resort.
