My family is coming in July and grandma is wheelchair bound. We have pushed her in the past, but we’re considering an ECV this time. How do they handle this in the table service restaurants? She can transfer, but is unable to walk.

    Hi, Kerri!

One of the things I love most about the Walt Disney World Resort is how great they are at making the magic accessible to everyone.  A few years ago, I planned a Walt Disney World vacation for our extended family.  We had three people in our party using Electric Conveyance Vehicles (ECV), and I'm happy to tell you that they had no trouble participating fully in our Walt Disney World fun.

With all of the walking that a Walt Disney World vacation entails, I would highly recommend that you rent an ECV for your grandma and avoid the need to push a wheelchair throughout your visit.  You can refer to the Walt Disney World website for information on ECV rentals.  During my family's trip, we rented ECVs from one of the Disney Featured Providers listed on the website so that our family members could utilize the ECV during our entire vacation, not only in the theme parks.

During our extended family trip, my mother-in-law was in the same situation as your grandma.  She was able to transfer to and from her ECV, but could not walk any distance.  When we dined at a table-service restaurant, we simply explained this to the Cast Members when we checked in for our reservations.  They would either seat us in an area that the ECV could be driven to, or they would transfer my mother-in-law to a wheelchair to take her to our table.

The Walt Disney World website has quite a bit of information on services for guests with mobility disabilities that you may find helpful as you plan your trip.  If you have any other questions, please let us know.

    Have a magical day!
