HI moms. Family was coming down to DW in aug before school, then i noticed the new free DP offer at the end of August the(first week of school). Has anyone ever kept their kids out of school the first week to take advantage of the great offers available?

    Hi Janette,

When my children were smaller, I did take them out of school a few times to visit Walt Disney World. Many of the Moms on the Panel have as well. Personally, I was OK with taking my kids out in early elementary school. However, now that my oldest daughter is undertaking an advanced high school curriculum, the catch-up process is too arduous.

Whether to take your child out of school for travel is a very personal decision that you need to discuss with your child's teacher, as well as school administrators.

In general, here are some things to consider:

    - How well does your child do in school?
    - How well does your child adapt to falling behind in work?
    - Is your child's teacher supportive?
    - Are you breaking any district rules?
    - Will your child be missing anything particularly important at school.

In my mind, the first day is quite an important event, where rules and procedures are discussed and the tone for the year is set. But if you live in a small district where your child knows everyone, or your child is already familiar with the teacher's protocols, then this may not be as important.

Another thing to think about is whether free dining is really the best option for your family. I encourage you to take a look at an article on the independent website touringplans.com called "There is no such thing as a free dining plan." The author, Tom Bricker, explains some of the math behind free dining.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you and your family have a wonderful visit to Walt Disney World.
