is the experience worth the money stay at one of their resorts or would it be about the same to get cheaper hotel rooms and drive to the parks?

Ruby, it is all about the experience when you stay at a Walt Disney Resort!  Because Disney understands the various budgets that their guests must adhere to they offer some excellent Value Resorts to choose from.  These are All Star Sports, All Star Music, All Star Movies, Pop Century, and a new one opening in May 2012 the Art of Animation.  Each offers various room configurations and amenities.  You can book a Family Suite or book a room that is closer to the Main Buildings or save more money and walk just a few more steps.

The benefits of staying at a Disney resort include the complimentary transportation from the Orlando International Airport called Magical Express.  You will also have access to the complimentary transportation on property that includes the busses to all parks, resorts, and Downtown Disney, the boats, and monorails.  This is by far the easiest way to get to the parks and you aren't having to pay for parking each day as well as worrying about a full parking lot if you are traveling during a busy time.  Resort guests will have access to the parks on those days but not outside guests when a certain number is reached for the parks to be at capacity.

The Disney resorts are each themed for their guests young and old to enjoy during their stays.  All resorts have pools with the moderate and deluxe facilities being a little bit more extensive. But all the Value resorts have great pools and great dining quick service locations.

Another but not the final reason for staying on property is the ability to use the park's Extra Magic Hours. Parks will stay open late or open early for resort guests and this is a great time to hit that attraction that continuously has a long line.  Arrive early and stay late and have the most magical time of your life!
