    Pam Asked

We are so excited our first cruise is in March. My son is 14 and has some physical disabilities. I have read that special needs children up to the age of 12 may participate in childrens activities. Will he be able to join in the fun of teen programs?

    Hello Pam! Welcome aboard!

Last week I sailed on the Disney Magic and was able to sit down with the director of Youth Activities to discuss in detail the ways Disney Cruise Line's counselors work with children and teens with special needs. Let me assure you that they will do everything they can to ensure that your son is able to participate to the best of his abilities right along with everyone else.

Be sure that you call Disney Cruise Line to note any information possible about your son's needs and abilities on your reservation. This information will be given to the counselors in the Vibe, which is the teen club, before you even set foot on the boat. They will be expecting him and have his background information which will help them to prepare even more.

I'd suggest that your son visit the Vibe during the very first night of the cruise, as this is when the teens tend to meet up and form groups and start to plan their activities for the cruise. Many of these events go on in the Vibe itself, and others are elsewhere throughout the ship. The counselors will have your Wave Phone number (which is a cell phone you can use on the ship, included in your stateroom). They will be able to reach you with any concerns while your son is with the group. This first night is also a great time for you to chat personally with the counselors about any concerns you have or needs that they should be aware of.

I promise that the counselors are very well prepared to handle different needs, and do so each week on their sailings. They will be thrilled to assist your son with anything he needs and ensure that he has the time of his life with the other teens during their activities.

I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any further questions, Pam!
