Due to school constraints, the best time of year for us to travel to Disney is August. What are your thoughts and experiences about traveling to Disney at that time of year?

    Hi Margie!

Thanks for your question.  As a teacher, I certainly respect your desire to travel at a time that does not conflict with your kids' school schedule.  I traveled to Walt Disney World many times in the summer as a kid.  We made so many wonderful memories during those trips.  However, be advised that August is a particularly hot and humid time of year in Orlando.  Nonetheless, if you plan your days and choose your Disney resort wisely, it can be a magical time for a family vacation.

I would start by choosing a resort close to at least one of the Disney theme parks as this will afford your family a quick escape back to the hotel pool mid-day to rest and cool off for a few hours.  For instance, if you book a room at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, my personal favorite, you can be back at your resort after a 4-minute air-conditioned bus ride.  Similarly, Disney's Beach Club Resort is a 5-minute walk from the International Gateway of Epcot.  My family used this entrance countless times when we stayed there last week.  It was so convenient!

Additionally, I would suggest waking your dear husband and kids up early so that you can be at the park of your choice at rope drop.  This is when crowd levels and temperatures are the lowest all day.  You can get plenty accomplished during those first few hours of park operation.  Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take frequent breaks in Disney's air-conditioned attractions, shops, and restaurants.  Then you will find August a manageable time for a wonderful family vacation.

The other option, of course, is to plan a getaway for your children's spring break.  That's my very favorite time of year to visit Walt Disney World.  The Flower & Garden Festival is going on and the weather is typically glorious!

Don't hesitate to post additional questions for me as your plan your trip.  I'd love to help!
