Hi Doug, My DH has a conference every year at YC. Because we get a discounted room, we are unable to get on the dining plan. My dad loves the dining plan and wants to stay at POR, so we can try dining plan. Which to do? Dining plan, or better hotel?

    Nicole,

While I too like the convenience of the dining plan, I would opt for the better hotel room.

The dining plan can, if used properly, save you some money. The convenience factor is also nice, and having your dining paid for in advance is a plus for many as well.

But you could stick with the larger, better located hotel room and simply dine with your credit card, or bill to your room, and get much of that same convenience. As for the savings, sure, you can save if you dine a certain way. But often I find that the savings for me comes only when I am really eating a lot. If I am trying to not overindulge too much, the savings seem to fizzle rather quickly. Finally, the prepayment factor could be replicated by you just buying some gift cards from your local bank along the way, or just setting money aside in advance of your trip.

So yes, I like the dining plan too. But the benefits can largely be replicated, and don't outweigh the positives of being a stone's throw from Epcot, the BoardWalk, and Hollywood Studios.

Write me back if I can help more!

Have a magical (and delicious) vacation!
