Man in wheelchair on Expedition Everest

I am going to Disney World in 2 weeks and will possibly be wearing a walking boot. Do I have to take it off when I go through the metal detectors for each park? Thanks!

Hello, Debbie, and welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel.

I had to navigate Walt Disney World Resort in a walking boot a couple of years ago and while it was annoying, it was definitely manageable. You should not have to remove the boot as you go through security at each of the Theme Parks, but if there’s an issue the security guard can use a handheld wand to check you.

Since you’ll be visiting during the summer, I would recommend taking something to cover your boot in the event of rain. (I just used a small plastic trash bag and a roll of blue painter’s tape brought from home to keep my boot dry during afternoon storms.)

At Walt Disney World Resort, you will be doing a LOT of walking. My orthopedist advised me to listen to my body and to rest my feet whenever possible, but I would suggest talking to your doctor about tips or advice before you leave for Orlando. I made sure we had a dining reservation at a Table Service restaurant for lunch each day, and that allowed me some extra air-conditioned time to get off my feet. You can also take advantage of the many shows at each of the Theme Parks that allow for extended sit-down time, too. (Some of my favorites include The American Adventure at Epcot, the Festival of the Lion King at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, The Hall of Presidents or the Country Bear Jamboree at Magic Kingdom Park and For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.)

Should the walking become too much for you, you can also rent a wheelchair or an ECV at the Theme Parks, too. These are rented on a first-come, first-served basis, though.

I wish you the best of luck, Debbie, and I hope you have a wonderful visit to The Most Magical Place on Earth!
