    Bill from NJ Asked

We will be at Disney in January 2010. My kids have saved money to bring with them and I want to get them gift/debit cards to take instead of cash. Is there a preferred card? I was going to get Disney gift card but we are also visiting other parks.

    Bill:

What a great way to help them be independent and learn the value of what they're buying!  When we visit, our children are given a set amount and, rather than coming to us for every want, we've found them to really consider their purchases!

I think the idea of a gift card versus cash is a good one, but there are a few downsides.  The first downside of a gift card like Visa or American Express versus a Disney gift card is the transaction fee.  There is none with the Disney card, and when I visited my local Walgreen's for a gift card for Christmas most of the credit card gift cards carried a $4.95 to $5.95 fee!

The second downside is loss or theft.  Gift cards are considered cash and if it's lost, you might not be able to get your money back.

My suggestion is to consider American Express gift checks.  Disney, as well as many merchants in Orlando, take these.  And although they may carry a small fee, my local bank waives the fee for holders of some checking accounts.  The biggest plus for the American Express gift checks is that, if they're lost (and you've kept your receipts), you can get your money back quickly.

As a parent to another parent, I don't think I have to tell you that kids are notorious for losing things....this extra peace of mind may be worth the transaction fee.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
