We will be there in December, the week before Christmas, for my son's 8th birthday. Where would be the best character dinner/show/etc would be the best to do the day of his birthday? What other birthday extras would you suggest? thanks!

    Hi Kristen:

My boys, now 8 and 7, have been traveling to Walt Disney World since they were infants.  To this day, every trip they insist on eating at Chef Mickey’s - for breakfast, dinner, or both. Chef Mickey's features a party atmosphere at every meal, and the energy at Chef Mickey's is incredible. My boys not only enjoy the huge buffet, but their smiles shine when Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and Minnie stop by the table to pose for pictures and sign autographs.

I would also consider Hoop-Dee-Doo. The show is entertaining, the cast is talented, the atmosphere is festive, the jokes are plentiful (and corny), and the food is finger-licking tasty. Dinner is served family style and includes favorites like fried chicken, smoked bbq pork ribs, fresh corn bread, strawberry shortcake and the most delicious country-style baked beans I have ever tasted. The food and most drinks are all-you-can-consume, so you'll leave satisfied. As you enjoy the food, the extraordinary Hoop-Dee-Doo cast puts on a show full of dancing, singing, and comedy. Hoop-Dee-Doo is very interactive and the cast frequently takes the show from the stage and into the audience to sing songs and engage the guests.

As for other ideas, if you are staying on property, let the Cast Members know at check-in that it's your son's birthday. It's possible the front desk may be able to help arrange some Disney magic. Contact the Dream Makers at Disney Floral and Gifts at (407) WDW-GIFT or (407) 939-4438. If you are staying on property, they can help create a personalized in-room celebration. Consider giving your son a pirate transformation at The Pirates League.

Since this is a birthday visit, remember to check in at City Hall at the Magic Kingdom, or at guest relations at other parks, and pick up a “birthday" button. Many Cast Members will go out of their way to wish you and your party well, or greet you all with a kind gesture to make the visit more memorable.
