We are debating between a Fort Wilderness cabin & Port Orleans. We have 3 small children (1 boy age 5, and a set of girl twins age 4). Can you provide a comparison? What would you do?

I have had the pleasure of staying at both and I would be happy to offer a comparison, though I should tell you up front that I might not be of much help because I truly love both of these resorts!  I'll give it a shot though.

The cabins at Fort Wilderness are one of the most unique places to stay in all of Walt Disney World.  They're cozy, serene, and lend to a feeling of isolation--in spite of the fact that they are located in very close proximity to the Magic Kingdom.  If your family appreciates space to stretch out--as well as the ability to prepare your own meals--then the cabins would make an ideal home away from home.  The stables, beach, and campfire program offer recreational opportunities that can't be found at Port Orleans.  One possible drawback is that the sheer size of Fort Wilderness can make it difficult to get around without the use (and added expense) of a rented golf cart.

Port Orleans is similar to the cabins in some ways, and quite different in others.  It's the same in that it offers a woodsy atmosphere, but on a smaller scale.  It also offers some recreational opportunities that you won't find at every resort, including water-based activities at the marina and horse-drawn carriage rides.  Port Orleans offers a food court as well as a sit-down restaurant and lounge (at Port Orleans Riverside)  but Fort Wilderness does not have a food court or a lounge.

In short, I would recommend that you consider the type of vacation your family is looking for as you make this decision.  If you hope to spend a significant amount of down-time relaxing at your resort/room, then the cabins may be ideal.  If you are looking for strictly a traditional theme park experience, then a stay at Port Orleans may be more in line with that type of vacation.

    Hope that helps!
