Dear Moms Panel, We go to the World at least twice a year. I want to know if my two year old is ready for character dinner. DS loves Mickey Mouse. I took him to see Mickey at our last trip(Feb 2010) and he seemed to be scared of Mickey. Suggestions? Thx

    Hi Teresa,

Is character dining worth the money when you're not sure if it's something your child will enjoy.  This is a common dilemma among parents of toddlers.  You know they love Mickey; they watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, they have Mickey toys, they may even carry a plush Mickey around with them everywhere they go.  However, seeing your favorite TV character or toy larger than life can be intimidating.  I know it was for our little girl.

We chose to do the character dining experience anyway.  For one thing, many character meals are served buffet style which is perfect for small children who don't like to sit around waiting for their food to come to the table.  You can also be selective about your food choices, so you're sure to find a healthy option that your child will eat.

Believe me, your son is not the first child to be nervous about meeting the characters.  In my opinion they do a GREAT job reading signals.  The characters seem to know when to back off and when they can win over a new fan.  When a character comes to the table, simply say something like, "Hi Mickey! DS is just a little nervous about meeting you."  Mickey will usually stay near the adults in the group and just wave to your little one.

I think you should give it a try.  Your son may really enjoy seeing his favorite characters as they visit other tables, and the moment they win him over is priceless.  My little girl now shakes with excitement whenever her favorite character stops by the table.

Hope this helps.  Have a magical vacation!
