We have a day planned in Animal Kingdom. We are having breakfast with Donald at the Tusker House and I was looking for a counter service for dinner. Any suggestions? We were going to the Mara, but how do you get there? This is our first trip to Disney

Flame Tree Barbeque in Animal Kingdom is a good choice as far as a counter service restaurant in Animal Kingdom.  As the name of the restaurant implies, they serve standard barbeque fare including sandwiches, ribs, and chicken.  They have salads too, and plenty of sides to choose from.  Though the food is good, what I really like about this place is that the tables are scattered throughout a wooded area with a nice view of the lagoon.  Unlike typical counter service restaurants in which the tables are tightly squeezed into various dining rooms, seating at Flame Tree is plentiful and somewhat secluded.  There are multiple covered seating areas set next to a winding path among lots of trees and greenery.  Eating there will give you a peaceful break from park touring.  When we were there last, a boat cruised by on the lagoon with Mickey and lots of other characters on board.  They waved and danced around as they passed.  It was a great bonus!

Mara is not in Disney's Animal Kingdom park, it is located at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  To visit there, you would exit the park and take a bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  I would recommend dining in the park over this option since you are interested in a counter service restaurant.
