I would like to take my 6yo for 1 day next week. We'd be driving in from Tampa and going home that night. Is it worth booking a hotel for just that night? What time should we arrive for just a day visit?

Hi, Doray!  I'd say if by "next week" you are referring to Christmas week, the earlier you arrive the better.  The best time to get there to make the most of your one day would be at rope drop - right when the park opens for the day.  That will give you the maximum amount of park time you can get, and because it may be busier than normal due to the holiday crowds, you'll need as much time as possible.

If a hotel is an option, instead of planning to stay overnight the night after you've enjoyed the parks, consider staying the night before.  Drive up late in the day the day before you want to do a theme park, and if you book a hotel on Walt Disney World property, you can get up even earlier the next morning and maybe hit the park with extra magic hours that morning!  This gives you a bigger time advantage, as you'll have a full hour more in the morning to enjoy whichever park has the extra magic hours.

Enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!
