Mom and daughter on Expedition Everest

My daughter wants to ride her first roller coaster when we are at WDW in October. She is 9 and tall enough for all of them. Which one do you suggest that we take her on first? She is excited but apprehensive and I want it to be fun so she will like it.

    Hi Sara,

You're a smart mom to plan ahead. Riding my first roller coaster is something I'll never forget and I can't think of a better place to begin that tradition than Disney World!

I'd start with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom. Its fun and doesn't have any really big drops. If she likes that one, then head over to Space Mountain. Tell her that this one is completely in the dark so you can't see where you're heading but there aren't any loops or big drops either. It does have a lot of sharp turns.

If she's ready for more after those two, visit Disney's Animal Kingdom for Expedition Everest. This is an awesome roller coaster. Looking at it from the outside, you see the train climb a huge hill which looks very ominous but the ride itself isn't that bad. There are parts of it in the dark and one decent size drop but it doesn't go upside down and I've seen kids who just met the height requirement have a blast.

Also at Animal Kingdom is the Primeval Whirl. You can see the enter roller coaster so you'll know what its like before you get on. Its fun but a little jerky and spins which made me a little dizzy.

If she likes all of those, then she may be ready for the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios. I love roller coasters and this one is my favorite. It starts off with a bang, has loops and is in the dark (but not as dark as Space Mountain). The theme and soundtrack really put this roller coaster on the top of my must do list.

Starting off with the smaller coaster and working your way up is a great way to have fun and build courage. Let me know if you need more details on either of these.

Wishing you many magical roller coaster filled memories :-) Allison
