Hi. My daughter (3) was recently diagnosed on the autism spectrum. We last visited Disney in 2011 when she was 16 months and did ok. Going 9/22 Anything I should know that would help with our trip? I am a DVC member so I know a ton about Disney. Tips? Thx

Howdy Joe! Thanks so much for your question! I’m sending you happy thoughts as you navigate through your new journey.

I know your vacation to Walt Disney World will be a magical one. You may just want to take a few extra steps to ensure that your daughter has what she needs to ensure she is comfortable throughout your vacation. As you know, Walt Disney World Resort can be very stimulating for any 3 year old. Though your daughter’s diagnosis is relatively new, try to keep an eye out for her triggers and avoid them when possible. You might also want to have some reinforcers on hand to reward her behavior. If items such as a smartphone or bubbles will help her at certain times, have them available and let her enjoy them when appropriate.

I have two specific suggestions related to your Resort and time in the Theme Parks.

    1. Contact Disney Vacation Club Member Services and ask them to make a note about your daughter’s diagnosis. Request a Villa that will best accommodate you (quiet area, etc.). Then, when you are 10 days out from your check-in date, contact the Resort directly and ensure your request is noted. The Cast Members that take care of the Villa assignments will do their best to accommodate you.

    2. When you visit the Theme Parks, visit Guest Relations and request a Guest Assistance Card. Guest Relations is located near the front of each Theme Park. Visit with a Guest Relations Cast Member and explain your daughter’s situation. You will receive a Guest Assistance Card that is stamped appropriately. This service is designed to alert Cast Members about Guests who may need additional assistance. As needed and appropriate, Guests may be offered an alternative waiting area based on the attraction.

Please let me know if you need any further information and enjoy every minute of your magical Disney Vacation!
