    Kelly Asked

My daughter has apraxia, is clumsy, and SPD. My husband has PTSD. Any pointers on where to watch parades and fireworks from a quieter area? Also, any pointers on meeting characters with a child with SPD?

Hi, Kelly!  My husband also suffers from PTSD, and the best place for us to watch the fireworks is away from the theme parks.  I find that choosing locations like the beach at the Polynesian resort or from the deck at the Contemporary not only give him the option of going inside if the sounds and lights become to much, but they often keep us far enough away that it feels like a safer distance.  Alternatively, there are some dining locations, such as the California Grill, 'Ohana, or La Hacienda at EPCOT where you can watch the night time shows from inside.

As far as the characters go, I think it depends on how your daughter's SPD manifests, but you can always act as a buffer between her and the characters, or have her stand slightly in front of the characters.  This would keep her from being in touching distance of the characters, and may be a little easier for her.

You might also want to check into a Guest Assistance Card.  They are available at guest services at the theme parks, and they can help the cast members know what to do to make the experience for your daughter more pleasant.

I hope you have an absolutely amazing vacation!
