Mom And Son On Run

Darcie - I too have a little one with Down syndrome and we're going to Disney for the first time next week. I've heard conflicting things about what he should expect from the Guest Assistance Pass. Can you give me more insight as to what to expect? Thanks!

The Guest Assistance Card isn't exactly "one size fits all", which is probably why you're hearing conflicting information.  The considerations extended to your son will depend greatly on his level of need, so it's important to be specific in describing those needs to the Cast Member who assists  you.  If your son has significant vision impairments, for instance, be sure to clearly state that to the Cast Member.  The Cast Member would make note of it on the card and your son (and the rest of your party, up to a certain number) would have access to special seating in select shows.  You don't mention what age is he, but you may also be permitted to use a stroller as a wheelchair if he is not mobile.  That would allow you to bring a stroller into areas where strollers are normally restricted.

Without knowing your son's specific limitations it's difficult to tell you all of the accommodations that can be made for his specific needs.  You'll want to be very open with the Cast Member at Guest Relations who assists you with the Guest Assistance Card.  He or she can offer you more specific insight as to how to use the Guest Assistance Card to enhance your trip.

One more thought: I've always brought along a note from my daughter's doctor as well as our state-issued handicap placard when we visit WDW.  I've found that the details provided by the doctor quickly and thoroughly explain our situation.

Honestly, now that my daughter is mobile, we rarely (if ever) find the need to use a Guest Assistance Card.  But it was very helpful when she was younger.
