We are considering staying at AKL in September, but someone told me the animals can't be seen from the rooms at that time of the year b/c they are trying to avoid the heat. Is this true, and would the view be better in October?

I stayed in a savannah-view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in September 2008. We saw several animals outside our room on every day of our trip (giraffes, wildebeests, ostriches, various other birds) and saw many other animals on the savannah in other locations around the Lodge. Disney does a great job of providing shade trees, food stations, and watering holes for the animals in locations that are strategically near the guest rooms. This attracts the animals to the guest areas year round. I don't think you'll find any difference in the quality of animal viewing between September and October.
