Considering first trip to WDW first week of May with my 7 yo daughter. She is not spec. needs but is easily overstimulated to tears by crowds and noise. What resorts do you suggest for quick retreat and any ideas for making it fun, or is WDW a bad idea?

Hi Jennifer, thanks for stopping by the Moms Panel to get some tips and advice for traveling to Walt Disney World. Let me start off by saying that while Walt Disney World can be synonymous with crowds and noise, it's also a place of magic and wonder and they do their best to accommodate everyone. It just takes a little planning, but I think your daughter would love so many things about Walt Disney World while avoiding situations that might frighten or overstimulate her.

First, I'd say that you have chosen a great time to go where crowds would be lighter. I'm not saying there won't be crowds at all, but that is a time in between the chaos of spring break and Easter and the onslaught of people on summer vacation. In terms of resorts, you should consider which parks you would most likely spend the most time in. If it is Magic Kingdom or Epcot, I would recommend a resort on the monorail line as that could be a "quick retreat" to the resort from Magic Kingdom. Another one of my favorite resorts is Port Orleans Riverside because of its serene atmosphere. It is a little more spread out and often seems less crowded because of that, even though it may be full of people. It's not on the monorail line, but I wanted to offer another suggestion.

My next piece of advice would be to focus on the attractions that don't have a lot of loud noises or big special effects. Some great examples are Swiss Family Treehouse, Country Bear Jamboree, Peoplemover, Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid in Magic Kingdom or Living with the Land or Spaceship Earth in Epcot. She might also love to do something like Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom or the Kidcot Fun Stops in Epcot where she could have a great time but go at her own pace while feeling out the crowds.

I hope I was able to offer you some advice to make this an extra-special experience for all of you.
