We are considering a Disney Cruise. I have two boys, 4 and 7. One has high-functionning autism spectrum disorder and the other has attention deficit hyper activity disorder. Are your councellors equipped to handle children with particular needs?

Welcome aboard, Lysa! I'm happy to hear that your family is considering sailing with Disney! The counselors there are wonderful with children with special needs and are certainly happy to include them in all of the fun activities and events that take place in the clubs. Many of the counselors are trained to work with these children and help make sure that they have just as much fun as any of the other kids in the clubs.

My suggestion is to make a note on your cruise reservation indicating the specific needs of your boys. This way, the Cast Members are aware of this before you arrive. Then, on the first day of your sailing, while the clubs are holding Open House hours, stop by the spaces so you can go in with your boys. You'll be able to help get them acquainted in the fun spaces as well as chat with the counselors about their needs and any concerns you might have. The counselors can then speak with you about what is planned for the week and address any of your concerns.

You can rest assured that with the Wave Phones all guests receive (a set of cell phones with voice and text capabilities that each stateroom receives),  the counselors in the clubs can easily call or text you no matter where you are on the ship or at Castaway Cay, to let you know if your boys want you to pick them up or if another issue arises.

Also, there are couple Open House hours each day so that parents can stay and play with their kids in the club, since adults are not allowed in the clubs during secured programming time. I bet your boys will have fun both when they're there with the counselors and during Open House hours when you get to join them for the excitement in the clubs too!

I hope those details help as you begin planning this cruise, Lysa! Please stop back again if you have more questions about sailing with Disney!
