We are considering the basic meal plan for our trip 4/10. One of my reservations about getting is that we are not big desert eaters and it seems like that is part of the package for each meal. Can we get something else with the meal instead? Like a side?

    Hi Shannon,

My family usually visits WDW with the dining plan and we are not big dessert eaters either.  Unfortunately you can not substitute a side dish for a dessert.

We have found a couple of work-arounds for this problem when we eat at counter service restaurants.  Many times we get containers of fruit or yogurt parfaits.  We bring them back to our room's refrigerator.  My daughter appreciates having them for snacks in the mornings while we are getting ready.

Similarly you can get bags of pretzels, potato chips, or even candy bars and store them for quick snacks during your vacation.  You have the most flexibility if you eat a counter service at your resort because they usually have the largest selection of dessert options.

At most of the counter service restaurants in the parks your only option may be something like, a container of fruit or a Mickey shaped rice crispy treat.

I've done the cost analysis on many trip and we have never spent more on the dining plan than we would have just paying cash.  Some trips, especially ones where we leave with unused credits, it comes out that we only saved a few dollars.  I never regret getting the dining plan because its just so convenient.

    I hope that help
